During irrigation, all diverted water in excess of evapotranspiration will eventually return to stream or groundwater at a lower elevation where it can be reused by another user.

The portion of artificially applied water which is not consumed by evapotranspiration and returns to a watercourse or groundwater is called irrigation return flow.
